I’m not talking about advertising companies here who have big accounts with major soft drink or beer companies.

No, I am talking about people who have a specific service or product to offer, and helped others want it.  I am talking about people who have made millions of dollars in highly competitive markets just by marketing effectively. 

For example, if you could learn how one of these masters of marketing made more than 4 million dollars in a 24 hour period selling an information product, would you think that something from that experience might be able to help your practice?

I know it can (I’ve done it and seen it) and I am going to tell you how all of this unfolded in my mind to be able to help you.

I've worked in healthcare my entire adult life, and even some of my youth.  I am formally trained and educated as an athletic trainer, a wonderful job that I absolutely loved and made no money at (which is part of the reason I don’t do it anymore).

Along that journey I had an opportunity to work with several physicians and prominent people in the profession.  I have worked personally with physicians of NBA and NFL teams as well as all levels of healthcare professionals at the collegiate level.  I had the pleasure of working with athletes at all levels of competition from youth leagues to Olympic and professional athletes.  It was a kick!

As that career was winding down for me, I had also earned a couple of advanced degrees in leadership, another area that I enjoyed and knew had great potential and relevance.  I also involved myself deeply in the understanding of marketing.

One day many years ago while visiting with a good friend of mine, he suggested that I apply my experience to his profession, dentistry.  Because I respect him, I did. 

It didn’t take too long to discover something that you probably already know… You can’t change one thing in a practice without affecting every other thing.  A practice is a very intricate and interwoven system. 

I wanted to find out what it is that made that system work.  What was the central thing that dentistry and healthcare in general was all about?  Not the clinical side of course, but the business side?

I discovered it. 

I studied it.  I conducted focus groups on it.  I did thousands of surveys on it.  Hard research on not only what made it up, but it's results.  I taught it.

I applied of what I had learned academically to confirm what I had come to understand as the central element of what makes and effective and successful practice. 

I am going to share that with you, but before I do there is another important aspect to this story.

You see, from my time as a little boy, I was enthralled by Disneyland.  As I grew and came to understand more about what makes organizations work (leadership by the way), I also learned how very closely aligned the Vision of Disney and the central purpose of a practice are.

If you were to total the hours I have spent in a Disney park or studying Disney as a whole, it would be a terminal degree.  One year recently because of the work that I do, I was in a Disney park working with someone 78 days of that year!

I knew I had to teach others what I had learned. 

So what is the central most important aspect of the business of an ortho practice?

I was ready to teach you dentists, orthodontists and every healthcare profession what I knew.

I did everything I had been told to do.  I wrote a book that is still a best seller an Amazon (The Patient Experience, 4 Lessons from Disney to Dentistry).  I had wonderful marketing materials put together that were unique and shared a compelling message.  I spent thousands – tens of thousands – to help others understand what I had discovered.

The Result?

NOBODY CARED 

Alright, so that is not entirely true.  Those who bothered to listen got it and got on board and have done very well. 

Some thought leaders like Howard Farran saw the value and interviewed me about what I knew (you can listen to that interview on Dentaltown).  Successful doctors adopted the principles.

I knew that what I knew was of great value. 

How?

Because the doctors I consulted with personally and in their practices, not only were enjoying their lives more, they had a lot more money to enjoy life with.  They made millions from this.

I knew what I knew was good and important, but I needed to find someone to present the message better than I was. 

That cost me a lot of money and a few more years.  Others I hired to share this message saw what they understood to be the value, but they couldn’t get the right message with different result. 

So what did I do?  I did the only thing I knew to do.  DIG IN.

It was clear that if I wanted MY message to be better communicated, I needed to do it MYSELF.  I also knew that I needed help, but not from the protégées this time, from the masters of marketing themselves.

I have been a student of marketing, at the deepest levels, for more than 20 years.  Starting with Jay Abraham and then moving into the likes of Bob Serling, Corey Rudl, Mike Koenigs, Dan Kennedy, and my personal mentor and coach, Frank Kern.  Look them up.  You'll be impressed.

After all that learning, study and understanding, and the investment of literally tens of thousands of dollars, I came to understand one very important thing.
